The Kingdom of Bahrain was keen, through its different ministries as per the specialization of each, on providing services to its  citizen, as the Ministry of Labour and Social Development assigned the Muharraq Social Welfare Center to provide all social and welfare services for all segments of the society.
Working on advancement and development levels for such services.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Development established Muharraq Social Welfare Center for the Elderly category in 1995, at the expense of Abdullah bin Muhammad Al-Hamad Al-Zamil. The centre is chaired by a board of directors formed of prominent personalities with a history in the social field and long experience in charity work.

The centre is a residential institution that provides health, social, psychological, educational and recreational services to the elderly, of both genders, in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The centre has an administrative and technical staff, which includes all professional specialties, social workers, psychologists and nutritionists, as well as nurses, nursing supervisors, practical nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and medical services assistants.

The Center’s Objectives:

  1. To provide social, medical, psychological, living, and recreational care for Centre’s residents and according to the needs and requirements of each resident.
  2. To develop suitable rehabilitation programs for the elderly and benefit from their abilities and capabilities.
  3. To integrate the elderly with the surrounding environment and strengthen the tie between them and their families.
  4. To train and qualify the cadres working in the Centre, enhance their efficiency, and develop their capabilities in the field of elderly care.
  5. In pursuit of the centre’s management to provide distinguished services to meet the aspirations and needs of the beneficiaries (the elderly), the centre implemented the ISO 9001 quality management programme to improve and develop work procedures and to raise the level of job performance. Therefore, all procedures and processes approved for the elderly were reviewed and updated.

Admission Conditions:

1.      A Bahraini nationality.
2.      Not less than sixty years in age.
3.      Not able to work or unable to secure his needs by himself.
4.      Free of contagious diseases and mental disorders.
5.      Has no supporter who is legally responsible for him.
6.      Has the desire to benefit from the services of the Centre.


Types of Care:


1.  Permanent Care


This care is provided for the elderly category that do not have a supporter or whose families are not able to take care of them. They stay at Centre on a permanent basis till they leave this life. For the provision of this type of care, it is required to obtain the agreement of the elderly and their families.


2. Temporary Care


A type of care through which different services are provided for the elderly for a limited period that extends for one month or more due to emergency circumstances in the family.
